Scaling a Cleaner Solution for E-Waste Recycling

DEScycle CCO, Fred White, sits down with the LetsRecycle.com team to discuss how technology can change how e-waste is recycled, onshoring the recovery of critical metals and building supply chain resilience.

Preview:

Traditional e-waste recycling relies on high-temperature smelting — costly, carbon-intensive, and often offshore. A new UK venture, DEScycle, is pioneering a greener alternative using deep eutectic solvents to recover precious and critical metals from circuit boards at room temperature.

By developing modular plants that can be co-located with recyclers and data centres, DEScycle aims to cut transport emissions, boost recovery rates, and create a local, circular supply of critical materials. The company has secured £11m in Series A funding and is building its first demonstration facility, due in 2026.

For investors and industry players alike, the story highlights both the opportunities and challenges of scaling chemical innovations in recycling — from engineering hurdles to market adoption and regulatory approvals.
